Yes, you guessed it right!
They are describing nouns. They are adjectives.
Adjectives are of different kinds because they describe nouns and pronouns differently. Latest now learn a little more about them.
The different types of adjectives are:
- Descriptive adjective
- Adjective of quantity
- Demonstrative adjective
- Derivative adjective.
Descriptive adjective or adjective of quality:
Descriptive adjectives express the size, colour, shape of a person, thing, animal or place. Read the following examples.
- Dangerous chemicals
- Green vegetables
- Square box
- Big house
- Tall tree
- Cold morning
- True story
- Large lake
Note: sometimes more than one adjective can describe a noun.
- Reena brushed her long brown hair.
- It is a beautiful cloudy day
- Vienna is a city of lovely old buildings.
Adjective of quantity or adjective of number:
An adjective of quantity tells us the number (how many) of amount (how much) of a noun. Few words that we used as adjectives of quantity are:
- Some
- Little
- Much
- enough
- sufficient
- insufficient
- all
- Whole
- great
- any
These words are used with nouns as shown below:
- Some place
- Little girl
- Much time
- Enough space
- Insufficient water
- All night
- Whole meat
- Any house
Adjective of number can be further classified as:
- Definite number: one,two, three, first, second and third etc.,
- Indefinite number: some, any, much, no, several, few, all etc.,
- Distributive numerals: each, every, either, neither etc.,
- She ate three apples.
- I don't have much money.
- Each person will get a chocolate.
Demonstrative adjective:
Demonstrative adjectives are used to modify a noun so that we know which specific person place or thing is being referred to demonstrative adjectives are used to point out specific people or things. There are four demonstrative adjectives.
- This
- That
- These
- Those
- This balloon is mine.
- Those flowers are for you.
- That man is a police officer.
Note:
Demonstrative adjectives are different from demonstrative pronouns.
Demonstrative adjective is followed by a noun.
For example: This colour is brighter than that colour.
Demonstrative pronoun can stand alone. It is used to avoid the repetition of a noun.
Example: This is better than that.
Interrogative adjectives:
Interrogative adjectives are question words that preceed in noun or pronoun.
Interrogative adjectives are used with nouns to ask questions and they can't stand alone.
- What dress did the girl wear?
- Which state does she leave in?
- Whose book is this?
- Who scooter are you driving?
- Which dish are you going to prepare?
- What breed is your dog?
